Keep Kids Learning, Exploring and Active this Summer

Discovering the Adventures of Camp

Selby-Summer-Camp-320The sun is shining and kids are enjoying long days filled with outdoor play while learning new skills and making new friends. Summer camp is here! There are many ways your little ones will benefit from an outdoor experience this summer. We narrowed our list to the top five.

ACTIVE FUN – Running, jumping, climbing…physical activity is vital for a child’s development and lays the foundation for a healthy and active life. It helps to establish connections between different parts of the brain and is just plain FUN!

DEVELOP SOCIAL SKILLS – Campers experience new settings that teach them cooperation, self-control, confidence, empathy, and communication. Free from the social pressures at school, camp encourages kids to relax, which makes it easy to build friendships.

ENCOURAGE NEW INTERESTS – Summer camp is a great place for kids to gain new experiences and learn more about what interests them at a young age. The introduction to new things can spark new interests and in some cases become lifetime passions.

UNPLUG FROM TECHNOLOGY – When kids take a break from the internet, their cell phones and TV, they rediscover creativity and how entertaining the world around them can be. Campers learn to embrace a balanced lifestyle.

CONNECT WITH NATURE – Exposure to the natural environment helps foster an awareness of the bounty of gifts nature provides. Spending time outdoors can develop a lifetime of interest and curiosity about plants and help children become better stewards of the environment.

Selby Gardens is offering day camp programs in June to give kids a summer filled with exciting adventures in the great outdoors. Designed for ages 6 – 11 years, this year’s Selby Camp Lookout has teamed with Around the Bend Nature Tours to provide families and their little ones with a community of caring mentors to introduce new “un-plugged” experiences that encourage mental, physical and social growth. Camp registration is now open for the 3 one-week sessions; availability is limited.
